In 2020, fans could only watch Major League Baseball games in person during the final two rounds of the postseason. This year, every municipality and team has its own set of attendance policies â but things are changing rapidly as the deployment of the COVID-19 vaccines continues nationwide.
The Texas Rangers were the only team operating at maximum capacity from the get-go, but now 29 teams are either at 100 percent capacity or have set a date to get there. Most clubs have dropped the demand for proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test, and several have stopped requiring (though continue to recommend) the wearing of face masks.
The New York Yankees are the latest team to announce a full capacity date: June 18 for what theyâre calling Re-Opening Day at Yankee Stadium. The New York Mets quickly followed suit, announcing full capacity on June 21.
Only the Blue Jays have yet to set a date for full capacity in their current ballpark.
The Jays, in a unique situation due to the pandemic-related closure of the United States-Canadian Border, started their season at their spring training complex in Dunedin, Fla., before heading north to Sahlen Field in Buffalo. Total allowed capacity at the Triple-A ballpark is expected to jump to 80 percent on June 24, but that still only means about 13,200 seats will be available.
The Jays have to wait months, most likely, before the team can even begin playing home games in Toronto.
The Athletic has made this guide to MLB ballpark capacity and policies as an attempt to assist fans. This tracker was first published on Tuesday, March 23, 2021. We will update this page as we are alerted to new information, and will indicate where updates have been made with the date of revision.Â
Please always check directly with a team, via its website or otherwise, for the most up-to-date information. Teams and municipalities can change their policies at any time.
