RPG Dice: Heroes of Whitestone from WIMO Games is a mobile game that mixes fantasy board game with traditional turn-based combat. The game follows an unlikely group of heroes who band together to put an end to the machinations of a group of evil elves.
Playing RPG dice consists of two phases: board movement and combat. Moving the board involves rolling a six-sided die to land on a variety of different spaces. The game boards are all made up of small loops that the player can continuously cycle through as they attempt to land on the two or three spaces needed to progress the plot.
Spaces on the boards can have effects such as throwing the player into a random combat encounter, giving them upgrade materials, unlocking small snippets of conversation between their characters, or allowing them to purchase one of three cards from a merchant. These cards can be used to move around the board with more agency, such as moving forward or backward two spaces. However, they are so expensive that they often feel like a waste to buy when gold is better spent upgrading characters.
Overall, moving around the board lacks agency for players. There are a few decisions to make, like which character tactic to take on random challenges and which direction to take at four-way intersections, but that’s it. Picking a character’s approach to a problem seems pointless because regardless, the goal is achieved and other interactions, such as spaces that give the player bonus challenges to complete for a buff during of the next fight, completely deprive the player of any choice. Instead, the game simply selects a party member on its own.
The most choices the player has to make in RPG dice come when assembling their party. The game features battles with two sides of five characters that are split into a front row of three and a back row of two. Each character has three skills that correspond to typical tank, damage, and support roles. Each skill can also be equipped with a type of dice block that is rolled when the skill is used to grant bonus effects such as critical hits, buffs, or damage types. Upgrading the skill beyond the first level then allows players to equip multiple dice on each skill.
Players can also equip their characters with various pieces of gear that can be slowly earned through playing or purchased directly from the market. Each character’s models don’t change with their gear, but that’s understandable given how many characters there are to unlock with random summon scrolls.
Once the player is in combat, each character has an action bar that fills based on their initiative, with combat stopping when one fills up for the player to select which skill to use and which enemy to target. Back row enemies can only be targeted when the ones in front of them have been eliminated, unless the player is using a skill that targets all enemies at once.
First of all, RPG diceThe combat is engaging and quite fun, but it quickly gets repetitive and its simplicity shines through. This is especially true for random encounters. It didn’t take long for me to put the fight into double-speed autoplay, especially once I realized my party would easily stay over-leveled throughout the campaign.
Beyond the main campaign, the game features daily dungeons, hero dungeons, a PvP arena, and repeatable boss battles. The campaign also has two harder difficulties for players to want to continue after completing it, but all of that content is just less varied combat encounters than the campaign and can easily be beaten as long as your party is at the right level. level.
RPG dice also has very questionable monetization and incentive mechanisms. Not only does each of the seven campaign boards have its own set of premium resources that are advertised to the player, there are plenty of others priced around $20 that just don’t seem worth it. The game also has seasonal events which is a great idea, but so far they consist of rewarding the player for earning and spending the game’s premium currency. It all adds up to a system that uses a handful of different currencies and daily and weekly rotating markets that seem to be entirely designed to hide the true price of everything and induce a level of FOMO in the player.
Most of my time spent with RPG Dice: Heroes of Whitestone was characterized by trying to progress as fast as possible just for the sake of progress. Playing campaign boards tends to mostly involve going through the same loop over and over while crossing your fingers in hopes of landing on the few spots needed to progress while combat is usually just an excuse to put down the phone and pay attention to a program on television. . The idea behind RPG dice is a good; it’s just a shame he’s not able to focus his experience on something more enjoyable.
