“Last roll of the dice”: Aakash Chopra, Ajit Agarkar question the selection of Rahane over Vihari, Iyer in the 1st test, Sports News

Many were surprised when India decided to name struggling senior batsman Ajinkya Rahane in the game for the first test against South Africa which started at Centurion’s SuperSport Park on Sunday (December 26th). It was not an easy call from the team leadership as Rahane has been undergoing a lean patch in the longest format for quite some time now.

India went with a total of five bowlers in the first test as Shardul Thakur was selected as an all-rounder along with R Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami. Five bowlers meant India had to remove an extra hitter in the lineup as Shreyas Iyer and Hanuma Vihari failed to advance to Game 1 of the series.

Former Indian cricketers Aakash Chopra and Ajit Agarkar have both been unhappy with Rahane’s selection against Iyer and Vihari as they questioned his place in the XI. Chopra has said this could be the final roll of the Indian team leadership, hoping Rahane can deliver and trigger a turnaround for himself.

“Shryas Iyer can’t find a place in the place and you left with Rahane, so I think it’s the last roll of the dice, hoping all goes well. If not, I thinks it will be a huge test match for him, “Chopra said on Star sports.

Chopra also questioned India’s decision to select five bowlers in the game for the first test, saying South Africa’s batting team is not too strong at the moment. and did not set the world on fire. Chopra said four bowlers would have been enough for India, given that there is help available for fast bowlers on the greenish Centurion track.

“We started with five bowlers, personally I thought four was enough. I think if there is help in the box for the faster bowlers look at the opposition their hitter really doesn’t set the world on fire, four should be enough between three fast bowlers and Ashwin, ”said Chopra.

Agarkar also agreed with Chopra’s take on India’s XI and said Rahane should not have been chosen over Iyer and Vihari. While Iyer recently made a fantastic debut in the Two-Game Test Series against New Zealand at home, Vihari slammed three half centuries for India A on her tour of South Africa.

“Rahane missed the last Test India played in Mumbai due to some problem so you can tell he’s back because he’s an experienced activist, he did well before under these conditions. But I’m with Aakash I would have either chosen Vihari or Shreyas Iyer, ”Agarkar said.
