FAIRFIELD, Calif .– After a second straight win to open the game at the Fairfield Indians Memorial Day Tournament, the Medford Mustangs couldn’t keep up the momentum and ended Sunday’s action with an 8-3 loss to the Chico Nuts .
The Mustangs (2-1) opened the day with a 5-3 victory over Napa Valley Baseball Club U19.
One day after leading 4 for 5 at home plate in Medford’s opener of the season, Tanner Douglas scattered six hits in four innings of work to secure the victory over Napa Valley. AJ Balsiger threw two shutout innings to close and get the save.
Jace Miller went 1 for 3 with 2 RBIs, including a single with a scoring in the top of the fifth to lead Eli Westrick and give Medford a 5-3 lead. Westrick scored two points, while a trio of Mustangs – Darin Marsh, Chase Costanti and Aiden Horsley – also led in the races. Costanti had the Mustangs’ only extra goal against Napa Valley with a brace in the second inning.
The Mustangs led 2-1 on the night thanks to a single RBI from Miller and a sacrifice from Horsley flying right, but Chico took control with two runs in the third and four more in the fifth to move forward 7 -2.
Chico finished the game with 15 hits.
Miller finished with 2 RBIs against Chico. Marsh was the only Mustang with multi-hit play, going 2 on 3.
The Mustangs end the tournament against another opponent from California, Yuba City, at 9 a.m. this morning.
