NEWS: Everton write to referees’ chief over Anthony Gordon’s penalty shout after Joel Matip tackle

Everton have asked referees’ boss Mike Riley to explain an officiating decision during their loss to Liverpool on Sunday.

A tackle by Joel Matip on Anthony Gordon in the box was reviewed by the video assistant referee but Stuart Attwell’s on-pitch decision was not overturned.

Gordon was felled by a clumsy challenge from the centre back, who appeared to shove the 21-year-old as he burst through in the second half with the game goal-less.

Celtic have the league title in their sights

Celtic are just two wins away from winning the Scottish Premiership.

It has been a hard-fought battle between themselves and Rangers who sit six points behind them in second.

They stood tall in their 2-0 win over Ross County and they will need to continue to do so if they are to stop Rangers from securing back-to-back titles.

Marquinhos happy at PSG

Paris Saint-Germain captain Marquinhos is happy in Paris and would like to see out his career at the club if possible.

“Right now, no, I don’t want to leave. At the start, there was a time when I was interested in doing so, but since then my mind’s always been here at PSG. My desire is to stay. We know how it goes in football – as long as you’re performing and playing well, you can have a desire to stay.”

“But sometimes, things can change or the club can no longer want you, as we’ve seen in the past. If possible, I’d like to stay for life here in Paris. That would very much suit me and I would be happy with it.”

Discussions are ongoing for his contract — which runs until 2024 — to be extended.

“We just need to start games better” – Xavi

Barcelona suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to Rayo Vallecano at the Nou Camp last night.

“We deserved more,’ said boss Xavi. “It’s true that in the first half we weren’t ourselves but in the second half we improved.

“The ball just would not go in. It’s very similar to the game against Cádiz. Other teams are playing for their lives and we have to match the desire of our opponents.

“There are games that get complicated because we don’t start as we should.

“If you take the lead then you have everything under control. We don’t lack personality, we just need to start games better, it’s a shame because it was a golden opportunity.”
