Same day library distribution has resumed

Milwaukee Public Library locations will be without free N95 masks as of 12:30 p.m. Thursday, according to the health department.

The Milwaukee Health Department announced that the library and health clinic locations would have masks available again Thursday after the initial allocation of 500,000 masks was used earlier in the week.

Masks will remain available at these three Department of Health sites — Northwest Health Center, Southside Health Center and the Menomonee Valley Site — while supplies last. Officials anticipate all locations could be available by the end of the day on Thursday or Friday.

FOX6 News was at the Martin Luther King Library branch early Thursday and saw many people lining up at least an hour before the site opened. Some people even brought beach chairs while waiting for a pack of masks.

“It is a deadly and very contagious virus. I want to live. I am preparing for retirement. I want to live and enjoy my retirement,” said resident Joanne Hankins, who was waiting for masks on Thursday.

Around 130,000 masks were provided for library editions. As of Thursday afternoon, all 13 stores were sold out.

“Based on our past experience, this is going to happen fairly quickly,” said Nick Tomaro, the Milwaukee Health Department’s environmental health director for emergency preparedness. “It’s better protection than a cloth mask.”

The health department is asking for patience after some people tried to steal masks or threaten staff.

“Releasing a million masks to the public is not insignificant,” said Tomaro. “We’re doing our best to get these out as efficiently as possible, but you may have to wait a bit.”
