Shooting at dice game in South Africa leaves 4 dead, 2 injured

Four people have died and two have been injured following a shooting attack on a group of dice players in southern Johannesburg, South African police said on Sunday.

“Four people were pronounced dead at the scene while two people were taken to the nearest medical treatment center after sustaining gunshot wounds,” police spokesman Lt. Col. Mavela Masondo said. quoted by Timeslive news.

After a preliminary investigation, police concluded that the group of men were attacked at around 7:30 p.m. local time (1730 GMT) on Saturday by unknown individuals who shot at them.

Police have launched a manhunt for the suspects, Timeslive news reported.

“SAPS members responded to the call and immediately rushed to the scene of the crime where they found the deceased lying on the ground. While detectives were busy working and processing the crime scene, another report revealed that two other bodies of young men were found hanged in a nearby forest in an administrative area known as Maqhashu,” Kinana added.

The regional police spokesman added that a seventh victim of the violent attack, who was hospitalized with serious injuries, also died.

“That means the number of people who have died has now risen to seven – all South Africans and in their twenties,” Kinana told CNN, adding that the motive for the killing was unknown.

“We have not made any arrests at this stage. However, we have opened seven murder cases for investigation,” the police spokesman said.

The Eastern Cape, considered South Africa’s poorest province with nearly a million unemployed rural people, has seen an increase in the rate of murders and other violent crimes, according to local police statistics.

Lady Frere, a small town in the province, has recently made headlines for other unexplained murders.

In February, local media reported that regional police were investigating the possible existence of a “suspected serial killer on the loose” after three women and a man were found fatally stabbed inside their home in Lady Brother. Little has been heard about the results of the investigation.
